{"id":6148,"date":"2016-11-24T17:36:58","date_gmt":"2016-11-24T16:36:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tpole.it\/en\/news-by-t-pole\/dimensionamento-cpu\/"},"modified":"2019-11-08T17:35:52","modified_gmt":"2019-11-08T16:35:52","slug":"dimensionamento-cpu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tpole.it\/en\/news-by-t-pole\/dimensionamento-cpu\/","title":{"rendered":"Some information for the correct sizing of the CPU"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:48px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sizing the CPU:&nbsp;how to do it properly<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nWe all know the i3 i5 i7 processors &#8211; present on&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tpole.it\/news-by-t-pole-it\/skylake-6-generazione-processori-intel-core\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Skylake S<\/a>&nbsp;architecture &#8211; but we maybe do not know in depth about the main features and their differences.\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This newsletter aims to clarity this aspects, in order to provide some more information for the correct sizing of the CPU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At&nbsp;TPole we always pay much attention to the <strong>correct evaluation of the necessary performances<\/strong> analysis is very helpful to get a price\/performance and power consumption\/performance that is the most suitable for&nbsp;the customer application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following observations are specifically made referring to Skylake desktop architectures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CPUs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First of all, we would like to clarity the differences between i3, i5 and i7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A comparison with the automotive can be usefull to introduce these differences; we know that car models are available with different engines, from the quietest to the most sporty. We can say that&nbsp;i7 is the top model in this range, i3 and i5 are the &#8220;quiet versions&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CPUs are characterized by certain fundamental aspects:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>No. of cores (whether physical or logical)<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>cache<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>turbo boost technology<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>tdp<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>See below how these four factors combine in different CPU models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>CPU i7<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>i7 CPUs reach the highest level for the number of cores, cache, Turbo Boost technology and tdp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Considering for example the i7 6700 processor:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>8 available cores (4 physical and 4 logic)<\/li><li>8MB cache<\/li><li>3.40 GHz rated frequency that rises up to 4.0 GHz frequency boost<\/li><li>65W TDP<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Intel offers the versions 65W and the&nbsp;35W T versions that is representing the best compromise performance consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We see this by comparing the i7 6700 benchmark with i7 6700T:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/461d9ea65252f2195c9d38da7\/images\/7f34e63b-d6fb-4266-a38c-beb8afaf086c.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/461d9ea65252f2195c9d38da7\/images\/0b06b821-5083-4c23-a027-bad2fa1ca230.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There is also a processor i7 6700K model with 91W TDP which is the most powerful processor of this family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>CPU i5<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>i5 CPUs have the following features:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>only physical cores (hyper threating technology is not implemented)<\/li><li>the cache is reduced to 2MB (from 6MB to 8MB dell&#8217;i7)<\/li><li>TDP ranging from 91W to 35W<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>From these differences we can deduce that, if the client application does not use the logic core but only physical ones, probably a i5 processor is the correct choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the matter of bencmark highlighted below we chose the versions i5 6500 and i5 6500T to have a comparison with the previously considered two versions of i7 with equal TDP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/461d9ea65252f2195c9d38da7\/images\/5651be3a-d99f-4c13-9d3d-73499ca07cbe.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/461d9ea65252f2195c9d38da7\/images\/622cc7e3-71de-48a2-bb7e-51ca2d5740e8.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>CPU i3<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>i3 CPUs present the following characteristics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>only 2 physical cores are available + 2 logical cores (thanks to &#8216;hyper threading)<\/li><li>the chache L3 varies from 3MB up to 4MB on the&nbsp;top performing versions<\/li><li>the turboboost technology is not available<\/li><li>TDP range from 51W to 35W<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Using Hyper Threading technology it is possible to use&nbsp;4 cores (2 physical and 2 logical)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 3MB to 4MB cache is&nbsp;an excellent resource for the processors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below you can find the benchmark data of the embedded versions<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/461d9ea65252f2195c9d38da7\/images\/ac984553-b232-41c6-a9b1-f06db5893c5b.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/461d9ea65252f2195c9d38da7\/images\/ce6d7d5a-c65b-4a50-b3bd-e23d20812cff.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nWe hope this brief information will be useful for you to move more easily into the world of CPU Intel\u00ae i Core &#x2122;.\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our sales engineers are available to define with you the correct sizing of the HW architecture for&nbsp;your application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:56px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tpole.it\/contatti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Contact us for more information<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sizing the CPU:&nbsp;how to do it properly We all know the i3 i5 i7 processors &#8211;
